Tamil scholars had advised that the first day of the Tamil month of Thai be celebrated as the Tamil New Year. Accordingly, in 2008, the then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced that the Tamil New Year would henceforth be celebrated on the 1st of Thai. There are not only reasons given by Tamil scholars for this, but also scientific reasons.
