India is facing an unexpected ATM cash shortage in mid-2026, even though currency in circulation reached over ₹42.56 lakh crore as of May 29, 2026. The Confederation of ATM Industry (CATMi) reported to the Indian Banks’ Association that cash fulfillment for ATM replenishment dropped sharply—from 80% in November 2025 to just 57% in April 2026, a 43% shortfall.
