The steep, accident-prone 900-foot descent from Bengaluru into Tamil Nadu at Thoppur, caused by severe braking and heat on heavy lorries, is being bypassed by a 137-crore-per-km elevated bridge. NHAI has completed 41% of the new 6.6km bridge, designed to straighten the curves and make the NH44 route safe for all, which is set to open in 2028.
